Introduction

Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic products that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete and have essentially reached the end of their useful life. As per the E-Waste Rules 2016, e-waste is defined as “electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part, discarded as waste by the consumer or bulk consumer, as well as rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment and repair processes.”

E-waste contains many valuable, recoverable materials such as aluminium, copper, gold, silver, plastics and ferrous metals. To conserve natural resources and the energy needed to produce new electronic equipment from virgin resources, electronic equipment can be refurbished, reused and recycled instead of being land-filled. E-waste also contains toxic and hazardous materials — including mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium, chromium and chemical flame retardants — which can leach into soil and water.

Benefits of E-Waste Recycling

• Conserves natural resources: Many materials can be recovered from old electronics and used to make new products, reducing the need to mine new raw materials. Metals can be recovered from circuit boards, and the plastics and glass in monitors and televisions can be recycled.
• Supports the community: Donating old electronics helps provide refurbished products such as computers and mobile phones to low-income families, schools and not-for-profit organisations, giving people access to technology they might not otherwise afford.
• Creates local employment: Around 90 percent of electronic equipment is recyclable, so electronics recycling helps create jobs as new firms form and existing firms employ more people to recover recyclable materials.
• Protects public health and the environment: Many electronics contain toxic materials such as mercury and lead that can harm the environment if disposed of in ordinary bins. Safe reuse and recycling keeps these hazardous materials from harming people or the environment.
• Creates jobs: E-waste recycling creates new jobs for professional recyclers and a second market for recycled materials.

Collection Mechanism for E-Waste

• Under the Buy-Back Scheme, where a customer wants to discard an old product, they may call the toll-free number and our representatives will approach the customer and buy the discarded product in consideration.
• The customer may also deposit the discarded product at the nearest collection point and receive a discount voucher, becoming eligible for a discount on the purchase of selected new products from the company. The company coordinates with independent vendors who may sell the e-waste / end-of-life products collected by them.
• The company will further elaborate the scheme and keep updating it, based on experience gained while implementing it, on a quarterly basis.

Direct Collection from Customer’s Premises

For the collection of e-waste, the company has set up a toll-free number where any customer may call and register to deposit an old product free of cost or under the buy-back programme. The company publishes this toll-free number on its product manuals, website, social-media platforms and connected premises for customer information. Customers can call directly and the e-waste will be collected by the company or by its recycler partner. The company’s recycler partner manages logistics through Professional Logistics Pvt Ltd, available at most collection-centre locations.

Recycling of E-Waste

The company has tied up with M/s Ozone Waste LLP for the collection of all e-waste on a PAN-India basis, disposed of at their plant at C-25, UPSIDC, M.G. Road, Industrial Area, Hapur, Uttar Pradesh 245101. The waste is sent for further recycling to M/s Hayat E-Recycler Pvt Ltd — the recycler tied up with Ozone Waste LLP — whose recycling unit is at Plot No. F-53-54, M.G. Road Industrial Area, Hapur 245104, India.

Customers can call 1800-1023-843. Our representatives explain the disposal process, make customers aware of the nearest drop point, and provide information about the incentive offered against their end-of-life products. If a customer wishes to hand over material from their doorstep, we send our logistics team or e-waste solutions team to collect the items and channelise them to our e-waste partner plant for final processing.

Do’s

• Always look for information in the catalogue supplied with your product for end-of-life equipment handling.
• Ensure that only authorized recyclers / dismantlers handle your electronic products.
• Always call our toll-free number to dispose of products that have reached end-of-life.
• Always drop used electronic products, batteries or accessories at your nearest authorized e-waste collection point when they reach end-of-life.
• Always disconnect the battery from the product and ensure any glass surface is protected against breakage.

Don’ts

• Do not dismantle your electronic products on your own.
• Do not throw electronics in bins carrying a “do not dispose” sign.
• Do not give e-waste to informal or unorganised sectors such as local scrap dealers or rag pickers.
• Do not dispose of your product in garbage bins along with municipal waste that ultimately reaches landfill.
